Diving around Moalboal

Diving around Moalboal is a great way of finding lots of macro and if you’re lucky, seeing some bigger fish as well.

 Pictured here is a Nembrotha kurbayana  nudibranch, but not only one, three of them. An interesting picture indeed. Diving around Moalboal will give you the opportunity to spot various Nudibranches, mantis shrimp, blue ringed octopus (still on my list of things to see!), crabs, many different shrimps, pygmy sea horses and lots more and they are just a few of the smaller creatures you can encounter here and for bigger fish, how about a whale shark or a thresher shark?

Way back, at Pescador island, there used to be big schools of hammerhead sharks, but sadly, not anymore. You need to be really luck for encountering one of them.

There are also plenty of good dive sites, starting with a great house reef in front of PADI 5* IDC Center ‘Neptune Diving Adventures’. On the house reef you can spot another of Moalboal’s top attractions, the sardine ball. Literally ten of thousands of sardines swim together in a ‘ball’, an ever changing living picture. It’s great to just sit back and observe the twisting and rolling of the ball or swim under the ball and see how the ball opens and closes to let your bubbles pass. A truly remarkable experience.

There’s also one spot where the local fishermen each morning go in their small boats or from land or from a parked boat, fish for the sardines. Many times a few thousand sardines jump out of the water, giving a spectacular view during breakfast.
